Flout at Your Own Risk: LLMs Struggle with Pragmatic Cooperativity Under Epistemic Asymmetry

Researchers investigated the ability of Large Language Models (LLMs) to collaborate effectively in tasks with incomplete information. They introduced a concept of "collaborative epistemic asymmetry" and found that LLMs struggle to follow the cooperative principle, which is crucial for successful communication. The study used various LLM models and assessed their performance in both speaker and listener roles. The results showed that while LLMs demonstrated some pragmatic capabilities, they still face challenges in communicating effectively with incomplete information, and their failures can be predicted by Grice's maxims. This research highlights the limitations of current LLMs in collaborative tasks and suggests that further development is needed to improve their pragmatic reasoning capabilities.
